Vandervelden began his U Sports career in 2014-15 with the Trinity Western University Spartans. In his first season he played 13 games, scoring an average of 1.5 points per
game. His first U Sports points came against the University of Alberta Golden Bears on November 7th, 2014. He returned for his second year, suiting up for all 20 regular season games starting 8. That season he managed 10 points to hit double digit scoring for the first time against the UBC Thunderbirds and posted his first career double-double against the Brandon Bobcats with 11 and 11.He finished the season with averages of 4.5 points and 4.5 rebounds per game. In his third year with the Spartans, Vandervelden started 19 of his 20 matchups, giving his team four 20-point performances on the season. He upped his season averages to an impressive 12.8 points and 7.2 rebounds per game. He would go on to join the Mount Royal University Cougars in the 2018-19 season. In his Cougars regular season debut he would put up 17 points to set his season high. He would lead the league in blocks with 47 while adding in 10.2 points per game. After missing the next two seasons (including the canceled 2020-21 season) Patrick suited up for his
final year with the Cougars in 2021, where he helped MRU to a first round playoff win against the Thompson Rivers WolfPack in a game in which he blocked 4 shots. He netted averages of 8.1 points and 6.1 rebound per game to close out his U Sports career.

2016-17: Suiting up for the Spartans for the third and final time Vandervelden appeared in all 20 regular season games starting 19 of them … Put up 26 points across two games on opening weekend against UBCO … Had a career high 16 rebounds against Lethbridge on December 2nd, 2016 … Had four career-high 20 point outings on the season including back-to-back nights on December 2nd and 3rd, 2016 against Lethbridge … Had four games of double digit points from January 21st, 2017 to February 4th, 2017 … Finished the season 8th in Canada West for blocks … Averaged 12.8 points and 7.2 rebounds per game while increasing field goal shooting
