Stingers will face Calgary Surge back-to-back to kick off 2023

January 24th, 2023 (Edmonton) - The Edmonton Stingers of the Canadian Elite Basketball League (CEBL) has announced its 2023 schedule. The 20-game regular season schedule tips off with the Stingers squaring off against the newly-formed Calgary Surge in back-to-back games on May 27th and 28th, the first on the road at the WinSport Arena, then back in Edmonton for the home opener at the Edmonton Expo Centre's Flair Airlines Hangar.

"I can't think of a better way to start the Stingers fifth season, and my first as head coach, than against our provincial rivals," said head coach Jordan Baker. "With back-to-back games to start the season, our players will have to come to Edmonton in shape and ready to work right away."

This season will be Jordan Baker’s first season as bench-boss, supported by General Manager Steve Sir. Player signings are set to begin February 1st as the Stingers look to reload after failing to defend their back-to-back CEBL championships last season. With two new expansion teams entering the CEBL, 2023 will see increased competition from coast-to-coast as the league hits the half-decade mark.

The CEBL has announced a conference model of competition for its fifth season. The league’s 10 teams are divided into an Eastern and Western Conference. The Western Conference includes the Stingers, Surge, Saskatchewan Rattlers, Vancouver Bandits and Winnipeg Sea Bears. The Eastern Conference includes the Brampton Honey Badgers, Montréal Alliance, Niagara River Lions, Ottawa BlackJacks, and Scarborough Shooting Stars.

After battling the Surge, the Stingers will then face each Western and Eastern Conference teams at least once, including a trip to the relocated Honey Badgers in Brampton to face the reigning CEBL champs. The Stingers will also host the newly formed Winnipeg Sea Bears once and face them on the road twice. July 13th will be the Stingers final homestand of the regular season against the Saskatchewan Rattlers, and their final visit to the Sea Bears on July 29th will close out the 2023 regular season.

Fans can catch all the Stingers home action with 2023 Season Tickets starting at just $22/game. Flexible Voucher Packs, Group Rates, and Premium Seats are available for purchase via the Stingers website (www.thestingers.ca/tickets) or by contacting the Stingers at tickets@thestingers.ca.

The 2023 Championship Weekend takes place in Vancouver from August 11-13. Host Vancouver, along with the top-ranked team from the Eastern Conference, will automatically be seeded into the semifinals hosted at Championship Weekend.

The CEBL postseason will feature play-in games between the third and fourth-ranked teams in each conference. Winners will advance to the quarterfinals and play the second-best team of their respective conferences. The fifth-ranked team in each conference will be eliminated unless Vancouver places fifth in the west in which case the fourth-ranked west team will get eliminated. Quarterfinal winners in each conference will play their respective conference teams already seeded in the semifinals. The full postseason schedule will be revealed at a later date.

Select CEBL games will be nationally televised, indicated at a later date. All CEBL games including playoffs will be live-streamed on CEBL’s OTT platform, CEBL+, and on CEBL Mobile, the official app of the CEBL (available on Android and iOS devices).
