EDMONTON, AB – The Edmonton Stingers of the Canadian Elite Basketball League (CEBL) announced Friday that they have re-signed shooting guard Mathieu Kamba for the 2021 season.

“I cannot stress enough how important it is to have Mathieu Kamba signed early, as he is an essential part of our winning culture,” said Stingers President Brett Fraser. “He truly is one of Canada’s best. Mathieu has all the characteristics we need to defend our title for Alberta.”

Kamba joined the Edmonton Stingers in the 2019 inaugural season when he provided the team with scoring punch and shutdown perimeter defense. In 2019, Kamba averaged 7.7 points, 3.3 rebounds, and 2.8 assists per game over 17 games. During the CEBL Summer Series, Kamba had a breakout performance when he averaged 12.9 points, 4.9 rebounds, and 2.5 assists per game. Notably, Kamba led the Stingers in steals with 2.0 per game and hit the game winning shot in the Stingers first win of the CEBL Summer Series

"Kamba has been our secret weapon during the last two seasons but he is no longer a secret,” said Head Coach and General Manager Jermaine Small. “Statistically, he has improved in every category which speaks to his hard work and dedication. Our chance to repeat has become even better with his return.”

Prior to joining the Stingers, Kamba played four years at the University of Central Arkansas. Following his graduation from Central Arkansas, Kamba signed with Saenz Horeca Araberri of Spain’s LEB Gold League. In Spain, Kamba averaged 12.4 points, 3.5 rebounds, and 1.6 assists in 34 games, earning 31 starting assignments. In 2019, Kamba signed with Leyma Basquet Coruna of the LEB Gold League where he averaged 10.5 points, 2.8 rebounds and 1.3 assists. Following the 2020 CEBL Summer Series, Kamba returned to the LEB Gold League where he is averaging 12.8 points, 3.5 rebounds, 1.2 assists, and 1.3 steals per game over 6 contests with Melilla CB.

The CEBL is preparing for its third season in 2021, following the success of the 2020 CEBL Summer Series in St. Catharines, Ont., which saw a record 1.2 million viewers across Canada tune in to four days of live programming on CBC.
