Stingers Sign Forward Derrick Woods
EDMONTON, AB- The Edmonton Stingers of the CEBL have announced the signing of American forward Derrick Woods. The New Jersey native played four seasons of NCAA Division I basketball, suiting up for three different teams. Woods played professionally this past season in Denmark and Mexico.
Beginning his collegiate career in 2015-16 at St. Bonaventure University, Woods started 22 games for the Bonnies, averaging 3.5 points and 2.4 rebounds per game, scoring a season high of 11 points on January 2nd.
Woods would take his talents to Delaware University to compete for the Fightin’ Blue Hens in 2017. He would only compete in a total of 9 games, but in that span manage a 19 point 11 rebound double-double.
Transferring again, this time to Saint Peter’s for the 2018-19 season, Woods finished his career as a Peacock. Spending the next two years scoring 4.9 points per game across 46 matches and tallying five double-digit performances and one double-double, Wood finished his NCAA career with 384 total points.
Woods turned pro in 2021, signing with BK Amager of the Danish BasketLigaen. He spent 12 games with the club, pouring in 18.2 points and 9.6 rebounds per game, with half his game eclipsing 20 points. He would manage a 20 point 18 rebound performance on April 9th, but despite his success in Denmark he would return to North America to compete in the Mexican Basketball League (CIBACOPA) for Venados de Mazatlan.
Across 19 games, Woods shot an impressive 60% from the floor, propelling him to 12.7 points per game, four double-doubles, and a semi-finals appearance. Woods has racked up a reputation for his interior presence aided by his 6’8” frame, and will fit nicely into the Stingers offensive schemes. The versatile forward will join the 7-5 Stingers as they look to close out the rest of their season and carry momentum into the postseason.
