Stingers Welcome Former Rambler, Lucas Williamson
Williamson Helped Loyola to a Final Four Appearance in 2018
EDMONTON, AB - The Edmonton Stingers of the Canadian Elite basketball League (CEBL) announced Tuesday the signing of 6’4 American guard Lucas Williamson to their 2023 roster. Williamson, who currently plays for the Ontario Clippers of the NBA G League, attended Loyola University Chicago where he was teammates alongside Stingers forward Aher Uguak.
“I am super excited to sign with the Stingers and play in the CEBL,” said Williamson. “However, I am equally excited to be alongside my brother Aher Uguak once again and in his hometown of Edmonton. Me and Aher have built a relationship that transcends just sports so the opportunity to play with him again was not something I was going to miss. We have won a lot of high level games together and I hope to continue that success in Edmonton. I am looking forward to being a part of the team and the Edmonton community.”
Across 5 seasons and a program record 150 games with the Ramblers, Williamson managed 8.9 points, 3.8 rebounds, and 1.9 assists per game. Throughout his career he was named to 3 MVC All-Defensive Teams, Second-Team All-MVC and First-Team All-MVC, and was twice named MVC Defensive Player of the Year. He was also honoured as the MVC Tournament MVP and won the MVC Tournament Championship during his senior year in 2022. Williamson averaged 23.3 minutes 4.3 points per game in the 2018 NCAA Division I Tournament during the Ramblers run to the Final Four.
Following career highs in points (13.7 per game, a team-high) and assists (3.1 per game) during his senior year, Williamson signed an Exhibit 10 contract with the L.A. Clippers on June 24, 2022, and joined their G League counterpart in October. On November 4 Williamson made his professional debut in a matchup against the Santa Cruz Warriors, which saw him play 17 minutes and score 5 points. On December 15 he set a professional career high with a 14 point and 7 rebound performance against the South Bay Lakers. He has played 23 games with the Clippers this season, averaging 4.0 points and 1.5 rebounds per game.
“We are excited to bring Lucas on board for the 2023 season,” said Jordan Baker, head coach of the Edmonton Stingers. “He is an extremely intelligent player and tenacious defender and he fits exactly what we are looking for at the wing position.”
“Lucas is a winner,” said Stingers general manager Steve Sir. “He had a storied career for the Loyola Ramblers alongside Aher Uguak. He brings toughness, maturity and big game experience to the Stingers that we are excited for Edmonton fans to see on the court.”
The Stingers will tip-off their 2023 season in Calgary against the Surge May 27 before heading back to Edmonton for a rematch on May 28 at 4pm. A league created by Canadians for Canadians with a mission to develop Canadian players, coaches, sports executives, and referees, the CEBL boasts the highest percentage of Canadian players of any pro league in the country with 71 percent of its 2022 rosters being Canadian. Players bring experience from the NBA, NBA G League, top international pro leagues, the Canadian National team program, and top NCAA programs as well as U SPORTS. Nine players have moved from the CEBL into the NBA following a CEBL season, and 28 CEBL players attended NBA G League training camps during October. The CEBL season runs from May through August.
