Uguak Rejoins Stingers Following Solid Rookie Run

EDMONTON, AB - The Edmonton Stingers of the Canadian Elite basketball League (CEBL) announced the re-signing of Edmonton-born guard Aher Uguak for the 2023 season. Uguak’s first stint as a pro was during the 2022 CEBL season where he suited up for the Stingers for 20 games. The signing comes in the midst of his first international season with Niners Chemnitz of the German Basketball Bundesliga.

“This is going to be a big summer for Aher. He's spent this past year playing in one of the top leagues in the world and Edmonton fans are in for a treat to see one of our very own playing at home,  said general manager Steve Sir. “Aher is a terrific player and is only scratching the surface of his high potential. We are very excited to have him back as we are counting on him to be a major part of this team.”

A former Harry Ainlay Titan, Uguak played NCAA Division I basketball with the University of New Mexico Lobos in 2016 before transferring to Loyola University Chicago to play for the Ramblers. With five Division I seasons under his belt Uguak  averaged 9.7 points per game while shooting 50% from the field and 41% from beyond the 3-point line in 20 games played for Edmonton in his rookie year. He notched 20 or more points on two occasions, including the home opener against Niagara on May 25. He shined as a two-way player, often matching up with opponent’s top offensive weapons, a nod to his multiple MVC All-Defense Team awards during his NCAA run as a Rambler.

Uguak is currently averaging 9.6 points on 46% shooting in 19 games with Niners Chemnitz . He has notched double-digit scoring efforts six times this season, and with five of them coming after December of 2022 in theBasketball Bundesliga, Germany’s top domestic tier.

“Re-signing Aher was a major priority for our organization this off-season,” said head coach Jordan Baker. “His impact on both ends of the floor was tremendous for us in his rookie season and we look forward to seeing his role grow in 2023. As one of the top players to ever come out of Edmonton, I know Aher is motivated to bring a CEBL championship back home.”

“I am excited to be coming back home to Edmonton to play for the Stingers for the second consecutive year,” said Uguak. “It is a blessing to play in front of family, friends, and the best fans in the CEBL once again. My season in Germany is going well and I could not have asked for a better start to my pro career. We hope to end the last few months strong as we aim for a playoff push.”

Uguak joins Brody Clarke as the second Stinger to re-sign with the team who will tip-off their 2023 season in Calgary against the Surge May 27 before heading back to Edmonton for a rematch on May 28 at 4pm.
