Edmonton Stingers Extend Winning Streak After Beating Montreal Alliance 85-72

The Edmonton Stingers dominated the final three quarters and picked up their fourth consecutive win in a 85-72 victory over the Montreal Alliance on Wednesday at Edmonton Expo Centre.

The Stingers’ bench came to play with Adika Peter-McNeilly and Aher Uguak leading the squad in scoring with 18 points and 17 points respectively. Jordan Baker was in the mix with another well-rounded performance, putting up 13 points, 10 rebounds, 7 assists, 1 steal and 1 block. Brody Clarke added 11 points and 5 assists to the Stingers’ offence.

Meanwhile, Isiah Osborne had 15 points and 6 rebounds in just over 30 minutes of action for Montreal. Kenny Osse’s 13 points to go along with Nathan Cayo’s 12 and Hernst Laroche’s 10 rounded out the Alliance attack.

Edmonton finished the game at 49 per cent from the field and 38 per cent from three. They continued to share the rock with 26 assists on their 32 field goals and they out scored Montreal by 22 points in the paint.

“We had to play with the same desperation and urgency we played with in Niagara,” Stingers’ head coach Jermaine Small said. “We tightened the screws defensively and got out in transition. That’s who we are.”

The first quarter saw the Alliance playing feisty defence and getting good shots from inside the arc. Nathan Cayo was a presence on the low block for Montreal, bullying Edmonton bigs on his way to 8 first quarter points. Edmonton shot just 33 per cent in the opening frame, turned the ball over 5 times and were outscored 12-4 in the paint. Montreal shot 56 per cent in the opening quarter, relying exclusively on two-pointers and free throws and led 26-13 after one.

Montreal started strong in the second quarter and led 35-21. From then on, Edmonton dominated the second quarter. They went on a 18-0 run to end the half, powered by some transition layups from Aher Uguak. Jordan Baker led all scorers at halftime with 11 points while Adika Peter-McNeilly chipped in 10. The Stingers led 39-35 heading into the locker room.

Edmonton continued their run in the third, stretching it to 22-0 before the Alliance ended the run. Clarke started the quarter with 6 quick points for the Stingers and Rowell Graham-Bell scored 8 points off the bench in the third to help maintain an Edmonton lead. Osborne hit three triples in the third quarter to keep Montreal in the game, down 63-55 heading into the fourth.

After connecting on the game winning play against Niagara, Adika Peter-McNeilly and Aher Uguak made more big plays in the fourth quarter against Montreal. Peter-McNeilly had a coast-to-coast layup before Uguak scored 5 consecutive points for the Stingers. A Baker layup led them into the Elam ending up 75-60 with a target score of 84.

The Alliance showed some fight in the Elam ending but it was too little too late. Peter-McNeilly hit two threes in the final stretch, one of which was the game-winner.

The Alliance will look to bounce back Saturday at 4:00 p.m. ET in Guelph while the Stingers host the Scarborough Shooting Stars Sunday at 4:00 p.m. MT.
