Sold-Out Crowd For the First Meeting Between the Stingers and Shooting Stars

The two-time defending champion Edmonton Stingers will try to extend their four game win streak at home in their first ever meeting with the Scarborough Shooting Stars. The Shooting Stars will make their first appearance at Edmonton Expo Centre at 4 p.m. MT in the last game of three CEBL games on Sunday.

The Stingers meet the Shooting Stars after a 85-72 win over the Montréal Alliance at home. Led by Aher Uguak and Adika Peter-McNeilly’s performances off the bench, Edmonton rallied after a poor first quarter and controlled the rest of the game.

After wins over Niagara, Newfoundland and Saskatchewan, the Stingers improve to 4-1 on the season. In their four game win streak, the Stingers have shut down their opponents on the defensive end. Edmonton have held their opponents to less than 78 points per game in each of their four wins.

The Stingers are at their best on the offensive end when they share the basketball. They lead the league in assists at 23.6 per game. Edmonton are also near the top of the league on the glass. They average 39 rebounds per game, which sits them second in the CEBL, trailing only Hamilton.

Edmonton’s offence features a balanced attack with Aher Uguak and former Alberta Golden Bears Brody Clarke and Jordan Baker reaching double figures. They also have three players hovering around 9 points per game.

Baker is proving to once again be one of the most well-rounded players in the league, averaging 11.6 points per game, 11.2 rebounds per game, 5.4 assists per game and 1.5 steals per game. Clarke is leading the Stingers in scoring at 13.4 points per game on an efficient 49 per cent from the field and 50 per cent from three. Uguak is averaging 11 points per game on 57 per cent shooting while Devon Bookert, David Pekarek and Adika Peter-McNeilly each average close to 9 points per game.

The Scarborough Shooting Stars enter Sunday’s contest at 2-3, fresh off their first home win of the season. Scarborough defeated their fellow expansion franchise from Newfoundland 99-81 in front of a star-studded crowd. Jalen Harris had his best game of the season, dropping a franchise record 38 points on 15-26 field goals and hauled in 7 rebounds. Kyle Alexander had another double-double in the victory with 18 points and 11 rebounds.

Alexander is entering Sunday leading the league in rebounds with 12.3 per game. He’s also averaging 15.3 points per game on 63 per cent shooting and 1.5 blocks. Harris leads the team in scoring so far this season with 20.6 points per game, sitting fourth in the league.

The Shooting Stars aren’t living up to their name, however, placing last in the league in three-point percentage at 30.2 per cent. Harris, Kameron Chatman and Xavier Rathan-Mayes each shoot over five threes per game for Scarborough at a rate below 30 per cent.

The matchup with Edmonton is the first of three west coast games in a row for the Shooting Stars. They face Saskatchewan on Wednesday and Fraser Valley on Saturday.

The game will stream on CEBL+ live internationally and in Canada at cbcsports.ca, the CBC Sports app for iOS

and Android devices and the free CBC Gem streaming service. Games are also available on the CEBL’s official app, CEBL Mobile, available on iOS and Android devices.
