Edmonton Stingers V.s. Niagara River Lions

One of the biggest interconference tests of the early 2026 CEBL season arrives Sunday afternoon when the Edmonton Stingers host the defending champions, the Niagara River Lions, at the Edmonton EXPO Centre.

Edmonton enters the matchup looking to bounce back after a tough road loss to Vancouver.

The Stingers have shown great potential of becoming one of the league’s most physical teams by dominating the glass and emphasizing half-court defense, but offensive rhythm and late-game execution remain areas to clean up. Edmonton’s backcourt will also face one of its toughest defensive tests of the season. Stingers guards Taye Donald and Samage Teel will need to handle Niagara’s perimeter pressure while creating efficient offense against a disciplined defense. If the Stingers can limit turnovers and keep Niagara out of transition, they’ll give themselves a strong opportunity to compete deep into Target Score Time.

Niagara will be hungry for a first win of the season after a difficult loss in Winnipeg.

The defending champions once again feature a deep, athletic roster filled with experienced CEBL veterans and high-level professional talent. Donald Carey Jr is coming off a great performance against Vancouver with 15 points in 27 minutes of play. Nathan Cayo and Elijah Lufile continue to provide toughness, rebounding, and interior scoring. Niagara’s ability to pressure defensively and quickly turn stops into transition offense has made them one of the league’s most dangerous teams over the past several seasons.

Key matchup: Edmonton’s frontcourt size vs. Niagara’s versatility

The Stingers appear committed to establishing a physical identity in 2026. Edmonton added major size and rebounding presence with Isaac Jack and Dain Dainja, giving the team one of the biggest frontcourt rotations in the conference. Tre King continues to be one of the most versatile forwards in the league, capable of scoring inside, stretching the floor, and defending multiple positions. If Edmonton can establish its interior presence early and control second-chance opportunities, it could force Niagara into a slower-paced half-court game.

However, Niagara’s depth on the wing allows them to constantly rotate fresh defenders and apply pressure across the floor. Alongside Ahmad and Cayo, additions like JD Muila and Nigel Hylton bring length, athleticism, and defensive versatility that fit perfectly into Niagara’s aggressive system. The River Lions have consistently been among the CEBL’s best teams during Target Score Time because of their ability to execute offensively while maintaining defensive pressure late in games.

With two of the league’s deepest and most talented rosters meeting in Edmonton, Sunday’s matchup has the feel of an early-season playoff preview. The Stingers will look to make a statement on home court against the reigning champions, while Niagara hopes to continue reinforcing its status as a championship caliber team.

Edmonton returns to the court on Sunday May 31st, taking on Western Conference rivals, the Calgary Surge in an exciting road game.
