Stingers Training Camp Roster Announced

EDMONTON, AB- The Edmonton Stingers of the CEBL have announced their Training Camp Roster for the 2022 CEBL season. Familiar faces will be joining some new names as the team looks to capture their third straight CEBL title.

Headlining the roster are returning 2021 All-CEBL Team members Jordan Baker (first team) and Marlon Johnson Jr. (second team). Baker led the team and league in rebounding with 9.4 boards per game last year and was a nominee for Canadian Player of the Year, an award he took home in 2020. Johnson Jr. (15.3 points, 6.0 rebounds per game) was nominated for the 2021 Clutch Player of the Year and was second on the team in scoring and third in rebounding.

Rejoining the all star duo are guards Mathieu Kamba (12.0 points, 38.2% 3-point shooting), Adika Peter-McNeilly (10.5 points, 2.5 rebounds per game), and Jahmal Jones (6.5 points, 4.3 assists per game). Kamba won the championship with the Stingers in 2020 and 2021 alongside Peter-McNeilly who also captured the 6th Man of the Year Award last season. Jones returns for his second straight CEBL season and played for the Stingers in the BCLA Tournament across all three windows this winter.

Brody Clarke returns to the Stingers after a one year absence, having spent the past two seasons in Germany playing for the Trier Gladiators, scoring 14.8 points per game this past year. Clarke was an integral part of the Stingers’ 2020 CEBL Championship. Aher Uguak is making his return to Edmonton after a 5 season NCAA career that spanned two schools, one with the New Mexico Lobos and four with the Loyola University Chicago Ramblers. With the latter, he was two-time All-Defensive Team in the Missouri Valley Conference and won back-to-back MVC championships in 2021 and 2022.

New to Edmonton are forwards Rowell Graham-Bell and Freddie McSwain Jr. Graham-Bell has played 6 seasons professionally in Europe and competed on the British National Team as a youth. McSwain Jr. suited up for the Indiana University Hoosiers for two seasons from 2016-2018 and was drafted to the G League out of university. Guard Devon Bookert joins the Stingers as one of Florida State University’s best 3-point shooters ever. The Alaskan also played professionally for the Austin Spurs of the NBA G-League, in Czechoslovakia and in Romania.

Rounding out the list are the Stingers two 2022 U-Sport draft picks Patrick Vandervelden and Somto Dimanochie. With experience at both MRU and TWU, 6’10” Vandervelden brings size and skill to the loaded frontcourt, and was selected by head coach and general manager Jermaine Small with the 10th overall pick. Selected right after him at 11th was York University forward Somto Dimanochie, who has three seasons of U Sport experience under his belt.

Currently ineligible to participate in training camp is G-League Champion Roger Moute a Bidias, who is expected to join the Stingers later in the season.

Small will look to lead his team to their third straight championship. After taking over from Barnaby Cradock part way through the inaugural 2019 season, he is the winningest coach in CEBL history with a overall record of 32-5 (including playoffs) in his two-and-a-half seasons. Small coached the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns this past season, leading them to 9-9 regular season record and a first round playoff win over the UBCO Heat.

The Stingers season will begin on May 27th as they take on the Niagara River Lions at the Edmonton EXPO Centre. The home opener will include live halftime performances, fan giveaways, contests, and a special guest autograph signing.
